Biography

Rachel Lee Hovnanian currently lives and paints in New York City. She was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, near the farm in southeastern Ohio where she spent her first six years. Her family moved from Ohio to Houston, Texas, where she attended primary and secondary schools. During her childhood she traveled extensively in Mexico and Europe and often visited New York City, where her parents had lived when they were first married. She grew up in the company of American modernist artists Balcomb Greene, Janice Biala, Alain Brustlein and others who were friends of her family. Hovnanian studied under Charles Umlauf at the University of Texas in Austin where she received her BFA. She continued her studies in New York City at Parsons School of Design, The Arts Students League, and the National Academy of Design under Wolf Kahn.
